This design hails from the 1880s, and exemplifies the Victorian fascination with all things they considered "foreign." The designs are inspired by Arabic script and design motifs (though there is no actual legible Arabic to be found here), and the wavy pattern in the background is evocative of rippling sand. While the ideals these escutcheons represent should absolutely be left in the past, they are nonetheless an important piece of history, and these particular pieces are in remarkably good shape for their age!
Condition: Great antique condition. Some surface dings and scratches, as well as patina and verdigris, all commensurate with age. Made of heavy cast bronze, though, these have withstood the test of time without any major structural damage. Each escutcheon is stamped "M.W.Co." and "4406" on the back. Sold as a pair.
