Home All Canterbury Floral Design Silent Butler
A silver-tone silent butler, which looks somewhat like a pan, with a round portion and a slightly tapered rectangular handle. The round portion is made of hammered aluminum with much of the texture burnished out, and has a very detailed floral design etched into it. The handle is also hammered aluminum, but with a much more distinct texture. There is a curled piece of brushed aluminum where the two pieces meet, which is used to open the lid.

A view of the inside with the lid open, showing a more heavily hammered texture on the inside. The hammered texture has been worn down smooth around the edge, likely from contact with the bowl. The bowl is also hammered aluminum, and is riveted to the handle with a triangle of three large rivets, while the lid is riveted on with two. The Canterbury logo - a knight's helmet in profile - is stamped into the underside of the lid on the edge, though it is partly cut off by the edge of the lid.

Silent butlers were used throughout the mid-century era to catch crumbs and ashes brushed off of tables, most often between courses of a meal, to ensure both the table and the floor stayed clean. This particular piece was made by Canterbury, and showcases a truly beautiful floral design on the lid. A wonderful collector's item, or the perfect opportunity to bring back fancy, multi-course dinner parties!

Condition: Good antique condition. There is some wear and small stains on the surface, as can be seen in the photos. The thumbpiece for the lid has also been bent slightly, though it still works for opening the lid.
